D.C. United players Mario Gori and Raul Diaz Arce were arrested on the afternoon of Aug. 17 in connection with the sexual assault of a woman in Columbus, Ohio, police said Aug. 18. Argentine defender Gori is accused of rape, while Salvadoran forward Diaz Arce is charged with complicity to rape. Police have released few details about the case, except that the incident occurred in a downtown hotel. D.C. United lost to the Columbus Crew 2-0 on Aug. 16. MLS commissioner Doug Logan has issued the following statement regarding the charges: “Major League Soccer and D.C. United are very concerned over the charges made against Mario Gori and Raul Diaz Arce in Columbus, Ohio. “The presumption of innocence is a sacred right in this country, and we will provide assistance to our players through the investigative process. The players will remain on the active roster of D.C. United and once the team and coach believe they can compete, they will be eligible to play. “MLS and D.C. United do not minimize the gravity of the charges. We condemn the type of behavior that has been alleged to have taken place. The league, our teams and our players will cooperate fully with the investigation.”
