Raul Diaz Arce, the all-time leading scorer in Major League Soccer, began training with the San Jose Clash March 15 and might be available to play March 20 when the Clash opens the season against the defending MLS champion Chicago Fire at Spartan Stadium. “We’re excited that Raul has joined us,” Clash GM Lynne Meterparel said. “He’s an important part of our team, and we’re eager for him to begin working with our other players.” Diaz Arce, obtained by the Clash from the New England Revolution In January in a three-way trade that also involved the MetroStars, missed the first six weeks of training camp in an attempt to renegotiate his contract with MLS. “Our position all along has been that Raul has a contract with the league, a contract we expect him to honor, and negotiations with the league could not take place until Raul reported to camp,” Meterparel said. “I am happy to be in San Jose, and I hope I will be able to play Saturday,” Diaz Arce said after working out with his new team this morning. “I am in good condition, and I will work hard this week with my new teammates so I can play against Chicago.” Diaz Arce, 29, had 56 goals and 16 assists in three MLS seasons, the first two with D.C. United, where he helped win back-to-back league championships. A star on El Salvador’s national team, where he plays with Clash forward Ronald Cerritos, Diaz Arce has 16 goals in 53 international appearances. “I’m glad Raul is in camp. He’s an important part of this team,” Clash coach Brian Quinn said. “We’ll get him working with the rest of the team and see how his fitness is, then we’ll make a decision on whether he can play with us Saturday.”
