Raul Diaz Arce, the second-leading goal and overall point scorer in MLS history, has been traded to the Tampa Bay Mutiny from the San Jose Clash for forward Alejandro Sequeira and future considerations. “We’re so excited to have Raul here,” said Tampa Bay GM Nick Sakiewicz. “We’ve liked him since his first day in MLS. One of our goals during the All-Star break was to acquire an offensive player like Raul. We achieved that this past weekend. He’s a true professional, and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure he scores a boatload of goals.” Diaz Arce has scored four goals and two assists this season for the 10-8 Clash. His last goal came against Tampa Bay as the Mutiny defeated San Jose 2-1 July 8 at Raymond James Stadium. Saturday, Diaz Arce started for the victorious West in the MLS All-Star Game, his third consecutive All-Star start. “The addition of Raul, a starter in the All-Star Game and one of MLS’ great scorers, is a major coup at the midway point of the season,” Mutiny coach Tim Hankinson said. “Our team has struggled scoring goals, and I believe the expertise Raul brings will help us in opponents scoring areas.” “I’m happy,” Diaz Arce said through an interpreter. “I’m ready to go. I’m looking forward to showing what I have and making sure all in the [Mutiny] organization are happy with me. I’m coming to Tampa with the mentality of scoring goals and winning a championship.” Diaz Arce is scheduled to arrive in Tampa tonight (July 19) and will begin training with the team July 20 in preparation for a July 25 match at Colorado. Meanwhile, San Jose receives in Sequeira a young compatriot of the team’s Costa Rican stars: defender Mauricio Wright and midfielder Mauricio Solis. “We’re making a run at the playoffs in the second half of the season, and Alejandro can help us with his skill and his abilities to build up our attack,” Clash GM Lynne Meterparel said. Sequeira is in his first season in MLS, and has had two stints with the Mutiny this year. A starter for the season’s first four games, the native of Costa Rica was waived after Tampa Bay reacquired Carlos Valderrama from Miami on April 23. Sequeira was brought back to the Mutiny June 3 after defender Jan Eriksson was lost for the season due to knee surgery. Sequeira has started seven of Tampa Bay’s last eight games and leaves the Mutiny with two goals and an assist. “I’m very excited to have Alejandro joining us,” said San Jose coach Brian Quinn. “He’s a very direct player, the kind who creates a lot of problems for the defense. He gives us a little different look in our attack, and he’ll make it harder for teams to defend against us.” Sequeira, 24, is scheduled to arrive tonight in San Jose and will train with the Clash this week in preparation for the team’s July 23 match at Chicago.
