Washington — Aside from goalkeeper, United has proven commodities at every position, if ex-Cavs produce. Might have league’s most potent attack. Rating: 1
Tampa Bay — Solid defensively, speed on the wings, and a nice mix of youth and experience. Lots of pressure on Lassiter. Good goalie. Who is this Lalas kid? Rating: 2
San Jose — A core of players who know each other well. Goalkeeping is a question mark, and Clash is shopping in Mexico for a midfielder. Rating: 3
Kansas City — Might be somewhat slow in the back, but plenty of explosiveness with Preki added to Takawira and Klopas. Rating: 4
Dallas — Lots of ex-Colorado Foxes, and the second day was a real smorgasbord. Should be sound defensively, once indoor players adjust. Rating: 5
Columbus —
A possible sleeper in Pete Marino, several ex-Hoosiers, and lots of experience on defense. Carrera and Corrales are 14 years apart. Rating: 6
Colorado — Stacked up on defenders the first day. Still must fill a couple of holes. Might Marcelo Balboa play in midfield? One foreigner slot open. Rating: 7
Los Angeles — Several puzzling first-day choices. David Kramer will perhaps play more in goal than does Jorge Campos. Manny Motajo is one to watch. Rating:
8 New England — Only one midfielder picked in the first nine rounds, and two foreigner slots remain — one for a Portuguese. Jim St. Andre an allocation? Rating: 9
New York/New Jersey — Some questionable early-round picks, and the defense looks shaky. Two openings for foreigners, who will be needed. Rating: 10
