The Chicago Fire has acquired its fourth international player, as MLS has allocated former Poland international Roman Kosecki to the Fire. The 32-year-old Kosecki, who has been playing with Legia Warsaw in Poland’s First Division, has made 69 appearances for the Polish national team, scoring 19 goals. He is expected to join Chicago in time for its opening game on March 21 at Miami. “Kosecki is a very experienced international player who will bring a high level of play to the Fire, as well as a good work ethic and attitude for a long-time pro,” said Fire Head Coach Bob Bradley. “Kosecki’s acquisition helps address our forward situation, as he can score goals from either a withdrawn forward or wing midfielder spot. We will also look to Kosecki to provide leadership on and off the field.” Kosecki started his soccer career with Mirkov and Gwardia Warsaw in Poland, but made his name with Legia Warsaw. After spending the 1989-90 & part of the 90-91 season with Legia, he was transferred to Turkish power Galatasaray. After a season and a half with the Istanbul club, he moved to Osasuna of the Spanish First Division. He then moved to Spanish power Atletico Madrid in July of 1993 for a then Polish-record of $1.6 million. He spent two seasons in Madrid, before moving again, this time to Nantes of the French First Division, where he competed in the European Champions League. After a second year in France, with Montpellier, he returned to Legia this past season. “Kosecki is an important part of the puzzle,” said Fire GM Peter Wilt. “He has proven himself at the highest level of soccer throughout Europe and this a big acquisition for us. He drastically improves our offense and will hopefully work well with Peter Nowak, similar to Marco Etcheverry and Jaime Moreno of D.C. United.”
