Peter Nowak, who was traded by the Chicago Fire to the New England Revolution for a future draft pick as part of the Fire's moves to get under the salary cap, has retired.

Nowak captained the Fire for five seasons, helping it win one MLS title (1998) and two Open Cup titles (1998 and 2000). He will return to the Fire in a non-playing role. That role will be announced Feb. 26.

''From the first moment I wore the No. 10 Chicago Fire uniform, I felt the adventure would have to end with the Fire red on my back,'' said Nowak.

The Fire traded Polish midfielder Nowak to New England in exchange for a conditional draft pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft.
