With less than four weeks remaining before the start of the 1999 MLS season, the Miami Fusion has added depth to its roster by signing a pair of discovery players: Mohenjo “Pepe” Smith and Andreas Maier. Each MLS team is allowed to designate two discovery players per year. A player qualifies as a discovery player if he is not currently under contract to MLS and is generally not on the league’s active scouting, projected player or draft lists. The Jamaican-born Smith, a graduate of Ft. Lauderdale’s Boyd Anderson High School, caught Fusion coach Ivo Wortmann’s eye during an invitation-only tryout held in early February. Smith is a 23-year-old defender who will not count against the foreign-player limit because he holds a U.S. green card. Smith played professionally for German Third Division club Spandauer in 1997, and recently has been playing with the Lauderdale Lions of the local Gold Coast League. “Pepe has speed, power and good skill,” said Wortmann. “What he has shown me up ’til now, he can be one of the starters, but it depends on him.” Maier, 27, worked out with the Fusion last winter but did not make the squad. This month, the coaching staff brought him back for a second look, and he was able to make an impression. In 1998, Maier played for the D3 Pro League’s Central Jersey Riptide with recent Fusion signing Tomas Wygonik. The midfielder had previously played for three years in Germany’s lower divisions. “Andreas is good with the ball, a hard worker with a great attitude,” said Wortmann. “I have to give him a chance to see how he will fit in with Major League Soccer.”
