In a swap of foreign players, the Miami Fusion has traded Argentine defender Mario Gori to the New England Revolution in exchange for Dutch playmaker Edwin Gorter. Gorter, who has played in the top divisions of the Dutch, French, Belgian and Swiss leagues, was the Revolution’s third-leading scorer last season, with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points. His playing time diminished dramatically under new player-coach Walter Zenga. He played in only six games for New England this season, scoring one goal. “Edwin is a talented player and a great professional,” said Zenga. “He deserves a chance to go somewhere where he can play every day.” The Fusion, struggling since the departure of Carlos Valderrama to Tampa Bay, should get a spark from Gorter’s play. “Gorter adds leadership, experience and versatility to our team,” said Doug Hamilton, Miami’s managing director. “Trading Mario [Gori] was hard because of the speed and work ethic he brought to the lineup, but we could not pass up the opportunity to acquire a veteran with [Gorter’s] skills and background.” Gori, 26, spent the first three MLS seasons with D.C. United before Miami acquired him in a trade during this past offseason. He made 12 appearances (including 11 starts) for Miami this year. “Mario is a great competitor and has proven his abilities and heart over the past four seasons in Major League Soccer,” said Zenga. “He has great endurance, fights for 90 minutes and can also be a valuable weapon coming forward to join the attack.” Both Gori and Gorter are expected to be with their new clubs for this weekend’s matches. New England travels to Dallas on June 26, while Miami hosts San Jose the same evening.
