Miami Fusion forward Diego Serna will miss the rest of the 1999 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee suffered in a collision with Todd Yeagley in an Aug. 1 game at Columbus. The injury was determined following an MRI and other procedures performed over the past several days at Holy Cross Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Serna and team officials will meet with Dr. George Caldwell of Holy Cross next week to discuss rehabilitation options. Surgery would keep Serna out of action for up to six months. “I will work very hard and hope to return soon,” said Serna. “I want the team to continue playing well so it will have good results at the end of the season.” Serna, 25, is the Fusion’s all-time leading scorer and 1998 Honda MVP. His 10 goals this season ranks him fourth on the MLS goal-scoring chart. Last year he recorded 11 goals and nine assists to lead the team in scoring. “Losing a player of Diego’s caliber is never easy. We will miss him and hope for a quick recovery,” said Fusion Managing Director Doug Hamilton. “We have several quality forwards who can step in and make an impact. Eric Wynalda, the leading scorer in the history of the U.S. national team, is scheduled to return to action in the next month. Young forwards Tony Kuhn and Saul Martinez have shown promise. We have the players to continue pressing for a playoff position and a run at MLS Cup ’99.” The Fusion will host the MetroStars on Aug. 7 at 8:00 p.m. (ET) at Lockhart Stadium.
