The Los Angeles Galaxy added to its international resume with a 2-1 victory over 10-time Mexican First Division Champion Chivas de Guadalajara in front of an estimated 30,000 fans at the Estadio de Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City. Galaxy rookie Brian Ching was the difference scoring the game-winning goal with two minutes left in the contest. Chivas forward Carlos Hermosillo, who starred for the Galaxy from 1998-99, scored the opening goal of the match in the 12th minute. Jair GarcfaÆs cross from the left wing found an open Hermosillo, who beat a helpless Kevin Hartman with a short range volley off his right foot, giving Chivas a 1-0 lead. Los Angeles midfielder Mauricio Cienfuegos responded for the Galaxy in the 21st minute, striking a 20-yard left footed shot that flew past Chivas goalkeeper Alfredo Toxqui. Adam Frye started the scoring play from the left wing sending a cross into the box for Simon Elliott, who attempted to control the pass with his chest. The ball bounced to the foot of a waiting Cienfuegos, who tied the match at one goal apiece. In the 88th minute, the GalaxyÆs Cobi Jones slipped a ball up the left flank to Paul Caligiuri, who ran on to the ball before striking a precise cross. Ching, who anticipated the keeperÆs attempt for the ball, beat him to the ball and redirected it with a flick of his head into the goal. The game ended with a near brawl, after the referee Hugo Leon Guajardo showed the red card to Chivas defender Edoardo Isela, after a violent action against Ching. The play appeared to be a retaliation against Ching, who clashed with Eduardo Medina in the 40th minute of the game resulting in a broken nose for the Chivas defender.
