The Los Angeles Galaxy has dropped the “interim” from Octavio Zambrano’s title, as the team made him their head coach Nov. 4. Zambrano, who served as Lothar Osiander’s top assistant during the inaugural MLS campaign, took over on an interim basis after Osiander was fired in June. Under Zambrano, the Galaxy made a remarkable turnaround, going 13-7 under his leadership and reaching the final of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. “Octavio really turned this team around after a bad start,” said Galaxy GM Danny Villanueva. “We all appreciate the attacking brand of soccer he employs and we’re confident he’ll be able to accomplish even more next year.” “While I’m very happy to be named head coach of the Galaxy, I won’t be satisfied until we win a championship,” said Zambrano. “With MLS Cup ’98 being played at the Rose Bowl, the incentive and the pressure to win is much greater — I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
