The Los Angeles Galaxy traded veteran midfielder Danny Pena to the Tampa Bay Mutiny for a conditional 2003 third-round SuperDraft pick. Pena, 33, made 103 appearances (97 starts) in five seasons with Los Angeles, registering five goals and nine assists for 19 points. He was a mainstay on the Galaxy for his first three years (1997-99). The 6-foot-0, 165-pound midfielder appeared in only 10 matches for the Galaxy, including five starts for 568 minutes, in 2001. A torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee forced Pena to miss nearly the entire second half of the 2000 season after undergoing surgery on June 28. He appeared in only 14 games. With the emergence of Pete Vagenas, Pena’s role on the Galaxy diminished. Pena had spent many years playing indoors and in the A-League.
