The Tampa Bay Mutiny will not exercise the final year option of head coach Tim Hankinson’s contract. His replacement is expected to be Alfonso Mondelo, the former MetroStars head coach who directed the Pro-40 Select in the A-League this season. Mondelo previously coached the Long Island Rough Riders, where Mutiny GM Bill Manning got his start. Hankinson, who took over as the third head coach in team history on June 9, 1998, was awarded a contract following the 1999 season that contained an option for the 2001 campaign. Hankinson, 45, guided the Mutiny to a 39-38-3 mark in two-and-a-half seasons. The victories are the most by a Mutiny head coach. Hankinson was 0-4-0 in the playoffs, taking Tampa Bay to back-to-back postseason appearances in 1999 and 2000, this year as the No. 4 seed versus the Los Angeles Galaxy. He was appointed following a 3-12 start by the Mutiny in 1998, and proceeded to compile a 9-8 mark the rest of the way, missing the playoffs by one point. Tampa Bay was 14-18 in 1999, Hankinson’s first full season, returning to the playoffs for the first time in two years. This past season, Hankinson led the Mutiny to a 16-12-4 regular-season record, and a second straight postseason berth.
