The New England Revolution acquired midfielder John Harkes for a first- and second-round college draft pick in the year 2000, in a trade with two-time MLS Champion D.C. United Feb. 2. United will also receive a future allocated player contingent upon Harkes’ 1999 performance with New England. Harkes is currently on loan with Nottingham Forest of the English Premier League and is expected to report to the Revs on or before March 15, in time for the team’s season opener March 28 in Miami. “Even in 1997, I wanted to have John Harkes on my team,” Revolution player/coach Walter Zenga said. “His competitive fire, leadership, and toughness make him a very special player.” Harkes, 31, made his first appearance for the U.S. national team on May 23, 1987 versus Canada and was a mainstay in the USA lineup for the next 11 years, before controversially being left off the France ’98 U.S. World Cup team. “Harkes has been a winner everywhere he has gone,” Revolution general manager Brian O’Donovan said. “He has played some of his best soccer in front of the fans at Foxboro. Now we can all root for him full time.”
