As expected, Cobi Jones has re-signed with MLS and will return to the Los Angeles for his sixth season. “We are pleased that one of the original members of the Galaxy will have an opportunity to build on his legacy with this franchise,” said Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid, who coached the midfielder as a collegian at UCLA (1988-91). “Cobi’s international experience will be a big plus for us at the FIFA Club World Championship this summer, and if he has the kind of season he is capable of, our chances of returning to MLS Cup are enhanced dramatically.” The club’s leading scorer each of the last three seasons, Jones is the Galaxy’s all-time leader in points (136) and goals (48) and ranks in the top three in assists (40, second), games played (131, third) and games started (129, third). “I am happy that everything came together for me to continue my career with the Galaxy,” said Jones, who captained the team during its CONCACAF Champions Cup run in January. “Southern California is my home, and I’m looking forward to being a part of the excitement in Spain this summer and helping this franchise get another chance to win the MLS title.” Jones traveled to England to try out with Ipswich Town of the Premier League, but a satisfactory contract was not forthcoming for the MLS free agent. Jones had two short spells abroad at Coventry City (England) and Vasco da Gama (Brazil) before the launch of MLS in 1996. A member of the U.S. national team program since 1992, Jones has played in an Olympics (1992) and two World Cups (1994 and ’98). He is the national team’s all-time leader in appearances (138) and assists (21) and ranks among the top four in goals (14, tied for fourth) and points (49, third).
