Wojtek Krakowiak, winner of the 1998 Hermann Trophy as the top player in collegiate soccer, has signed a contract with MLS and will play for San Jose, the team that drafted him last year. Krakowiak, a 5-foot-9 midfielder, was San Jose’s second-round pick in the 1999 MLS college draft. He chose to play in Germany, then briefly for the A-League’s Charleston Battery. The Earthquakes retained his rights and will now have him for the 2000 season. “This is an exciting addition for the Earthquakes,” Earthquakes general manager Lynne Meterparel said. “Wojtek was the best player in college soccer and should help improve our team in 2000.” “Wojtek caught the eye of all the MLS coaches throughout his career at Clemson,” San Jose head coach Lothar Osiander said. “I am delighted that he has signed. Now that he is coming to play for us, I have high expectations that he will contribute to the squad.” Krakowiak, who was born in Kielce, Poland, scored 31 goals and had 8 assists for Clemson in 1998. He played for the Tigers for two seasons after transferring from St. John’s, where he helped the Red Storm to the 1996 national championship and was named Soccer America’s Freshman of the Year.
