The much-anticipated trade of Roy Myers finally took place, when Los Angeles swapped the Costa Rican midfielder for MetroStars midfielder Brian Kelly. The Galaxy now has a foreigner spot open for Mexican star Luis Hernandez, who was acquired by the league on May 16. Hernandez is expected to make his L.A. debut in the May 20 clash with D.C. United at the Rose Bowl. Myers joins former Galaxy teammate Clint Mathis as the two newest MetroStars. “Roy is a versatile player who will add depth to the roster,” said MetroStars general manager Nick Sakiewicz. “I am very happy with both players we have added to our club this past week and I will continue to make as many changes as I deem are necessary for us to win games. Mathis and Myers both have experience in this league and we are looking for them to make an immediate impact.” Myers, a native of Limon, Costa Rica, was a member of the MetroStars for seven games last season recording one assist in 552 minutes of action. Myers was traded by the MetroStars on June 1, 1999 to the Galaxy in exchange for Brazilian forward Welton. In 19 games for the Galaxy, Myers scored four goals and added six assists in 1, 970 minutes of action. “Roy is a player that I expect to fit in nicely with our system here,” added head coach Octavio Zambrano. “Roy will be dressing for tomorrow’s game with Tampa Bay and I have confidence that if I call upon him he will perform up to my expectations.” The 6-1, 152-pound midfielder is a veteran of 13 years of First Division soccer. Myers began his professional career as a 17-year old member of his hometown club, Deportiva Limonense. Following his time with Deportiva Limonense, Myers played for Pe±arol (Uruguay) before spending six years in the Mexican League with Pachuca. Prior to joining the MetroStars, Myers was in Costa Rica where he was a member of Deportivo Saprissa. Myers has made 40 full international appearances for his national team and made his World Cup debut in 1990 on the squad that shocked experts by advancing to the second round in Italy. His extensive international experience also includes the 1998 CONCACAF Champions Cup and the recently completed 1999 UNCAF Nations Cup.
