MLS: League fines Mathis for altercation with fans

MetroStars forward Clint Mathis has been fined $500 by MLS for a going into the Giants Stadium stands and ''engaging in an extended verbal altercation'' at the end of the MetroStars' 2-0 loss to New England Nov. 1.

MLS's statement reads: ''Mathis' fine reflects his failure to leave the field expeditiously after the game and his verbal, but not physical, confrontation of hecklers proximate to the Giants Stadium tunnel.''
