U.S. national team stars Clint Mathis and Landon Donovan scored a minute apart in stoppage time to leave the MetroStars and San Jose deadlocked at 4-4 Wednesday night at Giants Stadium.
The game marked the first appearance by Donovan with the Quakes at the Meadowlands. He came off the bench for the Quakes, who rallied from one goal down three times.
The tie kept the Quakes in first place overall in Major League Soccer and extended their unbeaten streak to five games.
D.C. United won for the first time in nearly five years at Dallas, scoring two goals in the final 12 minutes to defeat the Burn, 3-1, at Dragon Stadium. Dema Kovalenko had the winner and Hristo struck on a 40-yard free kick to ice the victory, United's first on the road in 2003 and only its second in the last two years.
