The Kansas City Wizards acquired defenders Matt McKeon and Peter Vermes, plus the 15th overall pick in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for defender Scott Vermillion, the rights to a 2000 foreign allocation and the 20th overall pick in the draft. “With Peter [Vermes] and Matt [McKeon] we are adding two very gifted, versatile and extremely determined veterans to our lineup,” head coach Bob Gansler said. “I am very familiar with both as players and individuals and we feel that on the field, in the community and in the locker room they will improve our team.” McKeon, a 6-3, 195-pound defender, played in the Wizards inaugural three seasons (1996-98). With Kansas City, he appeared in 65 regular season games (60 starts), scoring four goals and notching two assists. McKeon, nicknamed “Train,” was traded to the Colorado Rapids on Nov. 18, 1998, in exchange for Chris Henderson. In 1999, McKeon logged a pair of assists in 28 games (27 starts) for Colorado. In addition, he earned a call-up to the U.S. national team in 1999 and made his first two career appearances. Vermes, a 6-1, 175-pound central defender, has appeared in 119 games (118 starts) during his four-year MLS career (4th all-time in MLS). He was the only player in MLS to play every minute of every game last season, where he also served as the Rapids co-captain. He has nine goals and 12 assists in league play. Vermes, 33, spent the 1996 campaign with the MetroStars, before a 1997 trade took him to Colorado for three years. Vermillion, 23, played two seasons for the Wizards. The native of Olathe, Kan., played in 46 games (44 starts) for Kansas City, with one goal and six assists.
