MLS has fined MetroStars goalkeeper Tony Meola $1,500 and suspended him for this evening’s match against the Colorado Rapids. Meola, who has played every minute of the MetroStars 24 games this season, was fined for major game misconduct and unsportsmanlike conduct during the Metros’ 3-1 loss to Miami Aug. 15. In addition to Meola, four other MetroStars players were fined for their actions during the match against Miami. Forwards Eduardo Hurtado and Marcelo Vega were each fined $250 for excessive dissent surrounding the referee to dispute decisions. Defender Mike Duhaney and midfielder Miles Joseph were each fined $100 for excessive dissent surrounding the referee to dispute decisions. Project-40 goalkeeper Tim Howard will make his MLS regular-season debut as Meola’s replacement. The MetroStars have called up goalkeeper Kevin East from the USISL D3 Pro League’s New Jersey Stallions to serve as Howard’s backup.
