The MetroStars acquired Honduran national team midfielder Amado Guevara as an allocation and signed him to a multi-year contract.
Guevara, who at 26 already has 76 caps for Honduras, will be joining the Metros after his third stint with Motagua of the Honduran First Division. He will likely join the team next Thursday and will be eligible for the MetroStars' match on Saturday, April 19, against the Los Angeles Galaxy at Giants Stadium.
Guevara, 26, has scored 14 goals for Honduras. Nicknamed ''El Lobo'' (translated ''The Wolf''), the 5'11'' midfield engine played 19 (all starts) of the Catrachos' 22 2002 World Cup qualifiers.
''We are very excited to bring Amado to the MetroStars,'' said MetroStars coach Bob Bradley. ''We feel that he is a player with the talent and experience to help make the MetroStars a better team.''
Guevara is well-traveled, having played for Honduran powerhouses Olimpia and Motagua, Real Valladolid in Spain, Tigres and Zacatepec in Mexico and Costa Rican power Saprissa.
Guevara scored Motagua's two goals in a first leg of its first-round CONCACAF Champions Cup series with the Los Angeles. The first leg ended in a 2-2 tie, but L.A. advanced with a 1-0 home win a week later.
The MetroStars also announced the signing of Fordham product John Wolyniec, who played four games for the Metros in 1999. He played 21 games for Bradley in parts of three seasons (2000-02) in Chicago and had one game in New England in 2001.
