The MetroStars have made another international player move, adding Colombian forward Henry Zambrano to the roster Zambrano, 25, recently played for Colombia in the Copa America in Paraguay, making one start and appearing as a substitute in two games. He collected an assist when he backheeled a ball to set up Neider Morantes’ goal against Ecuador. He made his debut with the full national team in 1997 after participating in the youth system since 1991. The 5-foot-6, 148-pound Zambrano played his most recent club soccer for Atletico Nacional in Colombia, where he scored the game-winning goal in the Copa Merconorte semifinals against Millonarios. He joined Atletico Nacional after a brief spell at Liga Deportiva de Quito, joining the Ecuadorian club mid-way through the 1998 season after previously spending time with America Cali and Independiente Medellin in Colombia. “Zambrano is the type of player who we believe should be an impact player in this league,” said MetroStars GM Charlie Stillitano. “He’s shown himself to be a great competitor, and pairing him with [Eduardo] Hurtado should make our team more explosive at forward. His speed and tenacity will be exciting to watch.” With the addition of Zambrano, the MetroStars now have four international players on the roster, the maximum allowed by the league. Zambrano joins Ecuadorian forward Hurtado, Serbian midfielder Sasa Curcic and Iranian defender Mohammad Khakpour. Curcic and Khakpour were signed by the league and allocated to the MetroStars last week. Zambrano, nicknamed “El Ferry,” should make his MLS debut in the MetroStars next home game, on July 24 against Miami. That game will be part of a doubleheader that will feature Zambrano’s former club, Atletico Nacional, against Mexican Torneo Verano champion Toluca.
