Edwin Gorter, the veteran Dutch playmaker whose spirited play helped lead the Miami Fusion to a playoff appearance last season, announced his retirement from professional soccer on Jan. 19. “Merlin,” as he is known to his fans for his magical passing skills, plans to continue his involvement in the sport as a player agent. “I’ve played my entire career with the number 10 on my back and the Fusion was my 10th team, so maybe it’s a sign to hang up the boots,” said Gorter from his home in Belgium. “After 20 years playing soccer, it’s time to do something else.” “Going to the U.S. was one of the best decisions I made in my career, and I’m very proud to have played there. I leave with very positive memories of the league and its fans. I hope they will remember me in the same way,” Gorter added. Gorter, 36, played with the New England Revolution for more than a season before being traded to the Fusion last June for defender Mario Gori. He ends his MLS career with 11 goals and eight assists in 49 regular season appearances. He also earned two playoff starts for the Fusion in 1999. Prior to joining MLS, Gorter recorded more than 130 goals in 432 games for several First Division teams throughout Europe. “It’s always difficult when you lose a player with Edwin’s experience and versatility, but we understand his decision and wish him great success in his new career,” said Fusion Managing Director Doug Hamilton. “Though it was for a short time, South Florida’s fans were fortunate to see a player of his caliber in action, and I know Edwin appreciated their support while he was here.” Gorter will keep an office in Belgium but concentrate his business efforts in the U.S., Italy and Switzerland. He plans to return to South Florida next month to attend MLS spring training, when players from all 12 teams will participate in a preseason tournament at Lockhart Stadium Feb. 9-18.
