The league’s Disciplinary Committee announced today the disciplinary measures levied against midfielders Martin Machon and Henry Gutierrez of the Miami Fusion for actions associated with the 4-2 loss to the Columbus Crew at Lockhart Stadium on May 27. The league has suspended Machon for two games and fined him $1,500 for prolonged excessive dissent and inflammatory comments made to the media. He will sit out the following matches: June 3 vs. the New England Revolution and June 7 at the Chicago Fire. Machon, the Fusion’s third leading scorer with five points (1 goal, 3 assists) who has appeared in nine matches this season, told the Miami Herald: “If this were Guatemala, they would have had rocks thrown at them and they would have had to run for their lives. As players we cannot criticize officials, but the fans recognized what happened.” More than 200 fans waited for the game officials, referee Rich Grady and referee’s assistants Sharon Wheeler and Peter Kokolski, by their exit gate after the Columbus game. The league also suspended Gutierrez for one game and fined him $500 for excessive dissent, disrespectful behavior toward an official and post-game comments made to the media after the Crew match. He will sit out the June 3 match vs. New England. Gutierrez, the club’s 1999 Honda Most Valuable Player who has appeared in 10 matches and has one goal on the year, told the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel: “Once again that 12th guy on the field is killing us. I don’t care, we obviously keep discussing this with the league. Somehow or another the 12th guy on the field isn’t doing us any justice.”
