The Tampa Bay Mutiny waived first-year Bolivian forward Jefferson Gottardi Aug. 11 and replaced him on the active roster with Ghana national team defender Joe Addo. Addo is immediately eligible to play for the Mutiny, beginning with the Aug. 13 game at Raymond James Stadium against Western Conference leader Colorado. Gottardi, who has been out of action since severely spraining his right ankle on June 25, started all 11 matches he played for Tampa Bay. He scored four goals and had one assist; two of his goals came in the season opener March 20 against D.C. United, making him the first Mutiny player to debut with a multi-goal match. Gottardi was on loan to Major League Soccer (MLS) from his club, Bolivar, and assigned to Tampa Bay as one of the team’s four foreign allocations on February 2. Addo is the captain of Ghana’s national team, with which he has 34 caps and two goals. Addo participated in the last two Olympic Games for Ghana, leading his squad to the bronze medal in 1992. His last club was Ethnikos of Greece; he has also played for Beleneses in Portugal, Cagliari in Italy, Stuttgart in Germany and with clubs in Holland. Addo attended George Mason University for two years, was a first team All-American in 1992 and a third-team All-American in 1991. In 37 games for GMU, the 27-year-old scored 11 goals and had six assists. “Jefferson has talent that we will miss seeing mature,” Mutiny coach Tim Hankinson said. “But with the number of season-ending losses to defenders we’ve gone through, the inconsistency we’ve experienced in the back has convinced me that a player of Joe Addo’s ability as a natural defender is necessary. As many times as we have asked midfielders – even creative midfielders – go play out of position in the defense leaves me no choice but to add Joe to our team.”
