Three Major League Soccer teams were involved in trades June 1, highlighted by San Jose Clash forward Eric Wynalda’s transfer to the Miami Fusion and the MetroStars sending Costa Rican midfielder Roy Myers to the Los Angeles Galaxy. The MetroStars received Wynalda from San Jose, relieving the Clash of the club’s future considerations to the MetroStars from the January 20, 1999, trade that sent midfielder Marcelo Vega and forward Raul Diaz Arce to San Jose as part of a multi-team deal. In exchange for Myers, Los Angeles sent Brazilian forward/midfielder Welton to the MetroStars. After receiving Wynalda and Welton, the MetroStars sent the two former MLS All-Stars and defender Arley Palacios to the Miami Fusion. In exchange for the three players, the MetroStars will receive a “marquee” player allocation from the league in the near future. The U.S. national team’s all-time leading scorer with 32 goals, Wynalda has not played for San Jose in 1999 after undergoing surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament and torn medial meniscus in his left knee on March 10. He is expected to return to MLS action in September. Wynalda, who turns 30 on June 9, has 21 goals and 29 assists for 71 points in 57 MLS regular-season games. Myers should bolster a Los Angeles attack that has scored a league-low seven goals (0.64 per game) in 1999. The 30-year-old Costa Rican national team attacking midfielder has one assist in seven games while playing as a forward and midfielder for the Metros. Welton, 24, finished third in MLS scoring in 1998. A two-time MLS All-Star, he brings speed and creativity to Miami. Hampered by a hamstring injury in 1999, Welton has one assist in nine games. Palacios, who scored a 27-yard curling freekick in the Metros’ 4-3 shootout loss to New England Saturday evening, gives Miami a rugged central defender to replace veteran Wade Webber, recently lost for the season with a knee injury. Palacios, who turns 25 on June 10, will be reunited with former Independiente Medellin teammate Diego Serna. The two players were signed by MLS on February 2, 1998. “With this deal we immediately upgrade the nucleus of our team,” said Miami Managing Director Doug Hamilton. “We add talent, depth and experience in critical areas – scoring and central defense. Combined with our current roster of talented young players, we are poised to compete at the highest level for years to come.” The Fusion is expected to waive forward Mickey Trotman in order to meet the league maximum of four foreign players. Major League Soccer and the MetroStars are currently in discussions with representatives of well-known international players. The allocation of one or more international players is expected to take place in the near future. “These moves are designed to put us in a position where we can build the best possible team while adhering to the league’s salary and international player guidelines,” said MetroStars GM Charlie Stillitano. “This is only the first step in a very ambitious plan to shape the MetroStars into the marquee club our fans deserve.” Myers will team with Mauricio Cienfuegos, Cobi Jones and Carlos Hermosillo to give Los Angeles four attacking players with extensive international experience. Myers will make his Galaxy debuts on Sunday, June 6, when the Kansas City Wizards visit the Rose Bowl. Hermosillo, who recently completed his Mexican season with Necaxa, has delayed his return by a week and will debut June 12 against Chicago. “With the upcoming arrival of Carlos Hermosillo, we were going to need another ball distributor in the midfield,” said Los Angeles Head Coach Sigi Schmid. “Myers, along with recent acquisition Simon Elliott, have good track records, and we look forward to them improving our midfield.” Here’s a quick overview of today’s deals: MetroStars: Received San Jose F Eric Wynalda to relieve the Clash of the obligation to give future considerations from the January 20, 1999, trade that sent M Marcelo Vega and F Raul Diaz Arce to San Jose as part of a multi-team deal.
