Simpson undergoes knee surgery

United suffered some bad news when it was revealed that keeper Mark Simpson needed surgery to repair a torn medial and lateral meniscus in his left knee. The operation was performed June 17 in Arlington. Va., and Simpson has been placed on injured reserve. He is expected to miss at least two weeks of action. Scott Garlick, who was in goal for United at the start of this season, has been reacquired from the A-League’s Carolina Dynamo in a loan agreement.

Jolley out for season

Los Angeles rookie defender Steve Jolley underwent season-ending knee surgery June 17 to repair a torn left ACL and torn cartilage. The injury occurred during Sunday’s 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Mutiny. Jolley caught his spikes in the grass during a collision with Mutiny defender Adam Frye in the 33rd minute. The injury is season-ending, but Jolley is expected to make a full recovery in approximately six months. “Steve Jolley was and still is my pick for Rookie of the Year,” said Galaxy interim head coach Octavio Zambrano. “Having seen all the players who came out of college this year, Steve probably adapted the most quickly to the program.”
