The Colorado Rapids traded the first pick in the 1997 MLS Supplemental Draft to Columbus for Uruguayan forward/midfielder Adrian Paz and an additional draft pick, the team announced today.

In addition, Colorado will select former UCLA defender Tahj Jakins with the first pick in the MLS Collegiate Draft, to be held later today in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Paz, who had six goals and a team-high ten assists for Columbus last year, is expected to play on the wing opposite Chris Henderson in the Rapids’ starting lineup.

:Adrian is a player who has proven himself on the international field and here in MLS,” said Colorado head coach Glenn Myernick. “We are thrilled to have acquired him today.”

Jakins, a First Team 1996 NSCAA all-America selection, anchored the UCLA defense and impressed Myernick, who coached him at the 1996 College All-Star game at the NCAA Final Four in December.

“Tahj is beyond his years and plays with more maturity than most other college players,” Myernick said. “(He’s) a good organizer and leader; he also possesses the physical components to play at this level.”
