New England boosted its previously sagging frontline by acquiring the United States’ all-time leading goalscorer Eric Wynalda and Spanish forward Jose Luis Morales. The Revolution traded disgruntled Ivan McKinley to Miami in exchange for the equally unhappy Wynalda. MLS allocated Morales, who is the first Spaniard in the league, to the Revs to fill their final allocation slot. Wynalda, who’s recovering from a nagging calf injury, or Morales, who is working to get fit, will probably pair with Wolde Harris up front, which would move forward Johnny Torres to the bench or to another position. The 26-year-old Morales came up through the Real Madrid youth system and debuted for Real in 1995. Most recently, he played for Spanish Second Division team Salamanca and led the club to a fourth-place finish this past season. The 31-year-old Wynalda, the all-time leading scorer in the history of the U.S. national team, leaves the Fusion after tallying three goals and two assists in only 12 regular season appearances since being traded from San Jose to Miami last June. This season he played in six games, recording a goal and an assist, before being sidelined with a nagging right calf/Achilles injury. McKinley can play in midfield or in the back for the Fusion.
