MLS conducted its Allocation and Dispersal Draft of players from the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny, which folded on Tuesday. New England picked up the last two MLS scoring champions in selecting Mamadou Diallo and Alex Pineda Chacon. The Revolution picked up Diallo, the 2000 champion, with the No. 2 pick in the Allocation Draft after Colorado picked Pablo Mastroeni with the No. 1 pick. Surprisingly, Pineda Chacon, the MVP and leading scorer in 2001, was still around with the No. 12 pick in the Dispersal Draft — ie., the No. 22 pick overall. The MetroStars picked up Miami star Diego Serna with the fourth pick in the Allocation in a trade with Colorado that sent Mark Chung to Colorado. The MetroStars also acquired Marcelo Balboa from Colorado in a deal after the drafts. The Rapids later selected Chris Henderson, marking the second time the U.S. national team veteran has returned to an old Club. He played with the Rapids between stints in Kansas City. Returning to Kansas City is Preki, who had been dropped by the Wizards after helping them win MLS Cup 2000. Preki and Henderson left K.C. for Miami, where they helped the Fusion to the best record during the 2001 regular season.
