Forward Giovanni Savarese will join San Jose for the rest of the season. The former New England Revolution and MetroStars player comes to the Earthquakes as a marquee player replacement for Ronald Cerritos, who has been injured most of the season. The Venezuelan forward currently plays for Italy’s Viterbese, which will loan Savarese to MLS for the Quakes’ last seven games of the regular season. He should be on hand for San Jose’s Aug. 9 U.S. Open Cup match against Lost Angeles at Cal State Fullerton. His San Jose debut should come Aug. 12, when Tampa Bay visits Spartan Stadium. Savarese scored 51 goals in four season with the MetroStars (1996-98) and the Revs (1999). In 112 games, he totaled 116 points. “I am looking forward to having him score goals like he did in New York and New England,” Earthquakes coach Lothar Osiander said. “He has a good nose for the goal and can help us the rest of the way. I’m excited to have him, if only for a short time.” “He is an accomplished goal-scorer and he should be a big help to the team for the rest of the season,” San Jose GM Lynne Meterparel said. “We are looking forward to him joining us.”
