The Los Angeles Galaxy has announced a press conference for Noon (PT) April 22 and is expected to name UCLA and U.S. U-20 national team coach Sigi Schmid as its new head coach, according to several Los Angeles area newspapers. Schmid, who has just returned from Nigeria, where he led the U.S. U-20s to the second round of the 1999 World Youth Championship, has had a long and successful career at UCLA. He replaces Octavio Zambrano, who led the Galaxy to a 24-8 record last season, but has seen the team struggle in 1999, scoring just three goals in five games and having no regulation wins. CLAVIJO, GALDERISI JOIN MLS COACHING STAFFS Former U.S. national team defender Fernando Clavijo and former New England Revolution forward Giuseppe Galderisi will serve as assistat coaches for the MetroStars and Revolution, respectively. Clavijo, who earned 61 caps for the U.S., will assist his former U.S. coach, Bora Milutinovic. He made his national team playing debut on November 21, 1990 against the Soviet Union, and was a starter for Milutinovic’s U.S. squad against Colombia, Romania and Brazil in the 1994 World Cup. The 43-year-old Clavijo recently served as an assistant coach for the Pro-40 Select team in the A-League, where he worked with current Mutiny Head Coach Tim Hankinson. He won an indoor championship as the coach of the CISL’s Seattle Seadogs in 1997 and most recently led the Florida Thundercats of the NPSL. “Expectations are very high this season, not only for the team, but for the organization, and I am definitely looking forward to the challenge,” said Clavijo. Meanwhile, the Revolution officially announced that Galderisi will serve as an assistant coach through the 1999 season. Galderisi joins player/coach Walter Zenga after having worked with the team in an unofficial capacity for the Revs’ last two games. Galderisi was also on the 1997 MLS Eastern Conference All-Star squad with Zenga. He tallied 12 goals and 16 assists in 48 games for the Revolution and the Tampa Bay Mutiny during his two-year playing career in MLS. Galderisi is also pursuing his professional coaching license in Italy, one of the most difficult countries in the world in which to gain accreditation, through a series of coaching courses and examinations. “I see tremendous potential for the Revolution and I look forward to working with Walter and the players to make this team great,” Galderisi said. “Walter and I have a tremendous amount of experience to draw upon, not only from the international and Serie A level, but from MLS as well.”
