Three teams made significant foreign-player signings less than two weeks before the MLS’s Year 5 kickoff. New England: The Revs signed Costa Rican forward William Sunsing. The 22-year-old, a member of the Costa Rican U-23 team that is vying for a spot in the 2000 Olympics, will count as an MLS “junior foreigner,” which means he does not take up one of the Revs’ four foreign-player spots. Sunsing, who has 10 full international caps according to Revs’ officials, has played with Costa Rican clubs Herediano and Ramonense. San Jose:The Earthquakes landed Iranian forward Khodadad Azizi of Iran. Azizi, who starred against the United States in a friendly 1-1 tie on Jan. 16 at the Rose Bowl, also played against the U.S. at France ’98. The 28-year-old, who was Asian Player of the Year in 1996, arrives from FC Cologne of the German Second Division. Columbus:The Crew signed Colombian midfielder John Wilmar Perez, 30, from Deportivo Cali of Colombian First Division. Perez, who played in all five of Colombia’s games in the 2000 Gold Cup, is slated to take playmaker responsibilities with the Crew.
