Brian Sebapole, a 22-year-old forward/midfielder from South Africa, has been signed by MLS as a discovery player for the San Jose Clash. “With Eric Wynalda injured, we felt the need to use our fifth international slot to bring in another goal scorer, and Brian fits that role,” said Clash GM Peter Bridgwater. “He’s also very quick, an accurate passer and a tireless worker.” Sebapole comes to MLS after three seasons with Jomo Cosmos of the South African Premier League. He has also made two appearances for the South African national team and is in the pool of players who have a chance to make the squad for France ’98. He is nicknamed “Baby Jake” because of a punishing, attacking style that reminds South African sports fans of lightweight boxing champion Baby Jake Matlala. “He’s another exciting, aggressive, offensive-minded player who has the skills and ability to help us win today and is young enough to help us keep winning in the future,” said Clash head coach Brian Quinn. San Jose’s roster now includes 12 players who are 23 years of age or younger. “We’ve gone from being one of the oldest teams in MLS last year to being one of the youngest,” Quinn added. Sebapole will be with San Jose for its match against the MetroStars April 25. To make room for him on the roster, the Clash waived midfielder Alberto Montoya.
