In their first meeting since MLS Cup 2000, Chicago earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Kansas City in MLS Spring Training 2001 action Saturday night at Lockhart Stadium. Striker John Wolyniec had a goal and an assist as Chicago (2-0) jumped to the top of the Spring Training standings. The forward leads Spring Training with three goals and an assist. “I’m in a good streak right now, helping my team win,” Wolyniec said. “We have been playing well in preseason. To score a couple goals on K.C. keeps us going in the right direction.” The Fire finally got one past Wizard goalkeeper Tony Meola in the 74th minute. Wolyniec controlled the ball outside the box and played a neat pass to guest player Kent Njoku inside the 18-yard box. Njoku showed great patience, holding the ball as a Wizard defender went by, finally sending a low shot past Meola just inside the left-hand post. Fire goalkeeper Henry Ring made four saves in the second half to preserve the shutout. Ring stopped Wizards midfielder Andrew Gregor from in close in the 81st minute and later stopped Roy Lassiter on a breakaway in the 87th minute. “This was a good opportunity for me to get out and perform tonight,” Ring said. “Everyone’s goal here is to get this team back to MLS Cup.” Wolyniec added an insurance goal in extra time, as the Wizards were pressing forward for the equalizer. Defender Carlos Bocanegra sent a long ball over the drawn in defense, allowing Wolyniec to race free against Meola. Wolyniec deked the MLS Cup MVP to his right and slid in the second Fire goal from 15 yards out. “Based on the yardstick we set in the first game, we weren’t as sharp physically or mentally tonight,” Wizards Head Coach Bob Gansler said. “The Fire imposed their game on us. Nevertheless, we are still on schedule.” The Fire will take on New England to end their Spring Training stint on March 22. March 17 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Chicago 2 Kansas City 0.
