Miami scored a pair of second half goals to defeat San Jose 2-1 in MLS Spring Training Preseason action March 20 at Lockhart Stadium. Fusion SuperDraft pick Greg Simmonds scored the game-winner in the 86th minute. The first-year Miami forward collected a through ball from midfielder Ian Bishop and blasted a left-footed shot from 18 yards out past ‘Quakes substitute goalkeeper David Alexander to the upper right-hand corner of the goal. “That was a good pass, it led between the defenders,” Simmonds said. “I just aimed for the far post, because I saw the goalkeeper wasn’t there. I had a great opportunity to come in and make a difference over the last 20 minutes.” Miami (1-0-1) captain Jim Rooney brought the Fusion even at 1-1 in the 68th minute, finishing a bending cross from Preki. Rooney headed the cross, sent from Preki on the right wing, on goal from six yards out only to have Alexander make a diving stop. Rooney collected the rebound in front of the goal and easily chipped in the equalizer. “We needed to get a goal, especially with a man advantage on the field,” Rooney said. “I was fortunate to get a great ball from Preki.” San Jose (0-2) struck for a goal against the run of play in the 64th minute, despite being a man-down. Guest player Ronnie Ekelund, a former Denmark international, slid a pass for Scott Bower on the right wing. The speedy Nike Project-40 player raced to the corner and crossed for Ronald Cerritos, who headed the ball past Fusion goalkeeper Nick Rimando from 10 yards out. Miami opened the second half with several chances to score, the best coming in the 52nd minute from Diego Serna. The Colombian striker rang a shot off the crossbar from a tight angle on the right wing. The first half had several decent chances, mostly from the Fusion. San Jose dodged a bullet in the 24th minute, as defender Jeff Agoos cleared a Chris Henderson header out of the ‘Quakes goal mouth to keep the game scoreless. The Earthquakes were forced to play the final 60 minutes of this match with 10 men after goalkeeper Joe Cannon was sent off with a red card. The ‘keeper charged out of his box to play a long ball about 20 yards from goal, but Serna got there first and re-directed the ball wide of the goal. Cannon’s momentum carried him right into Serna, knocking the striker over for a red card offense in the 28th minute. Guest player Alexander replaced striker Dwayne DeRosario as the Quakes went with just Ronald Cerritos in attack. The Fusion were without defender Tyrone Marshall, who is with the Jamaican national team preparing for a World Cup qualifier. Fellow defender Carlos Llamosa has been called into the U.S. side for their next World Cup qualifier as well. San Jose’s Agoos is also on the U.S. roster.
