MLS has allocated striker Chiquinho Conde to the New England Revolution.

Chiquinho Conde, a native of Mozambique and the captain of that country’s national team, is a big (6-0, 180 pounds) with speed and a finishing ability that has him currently among the top scorers in the Portuguese First Division, where he has played for Setubal, partnering Nigerian international Rashidi Yekini up front.

His career path is much like that of another great star from Mozambique — the legendary Eusebio, who left Africa for Portugal and eventually played in the NASL for Boston and Toronto.

Chiquinho Conde also moved from Mozambique to Portugal, where he played for perennial power Sporting Lisbon before moving to Setubal. Former MetroStars and Portuguese national team coach Carlos Queiroz recommended Chiquinho Conde to MLS, and the Northeast will again enjoy the skills of a talented goalscorer.

“We are extremely excited to acquire a player of Chiquinho’s talent and experience,” said Revs coach Thomas Rongen. “He is a proven goal scorer in an extremely competitive league and has tremendous international experience. He has the versatility to play up top or out wide and will give us a leadership presence on and off the field.”

The 31-year-old forward is currently away with the Mozambique national team preparing for a match against Malawi. He is expected to join New England at some point during the team’s training camp in Florida.
