MLS has assigned forward/midfielder Chris Sullivan to the San Jose Clash.
Sullivan, 31, joins San Jose from Raba ETO of the Hungarian First Division, where he played 11 games on loan from MLS after signing with the league in November.
“We’ve been interested in Chris Sullivan since before last season,” said San Jose GM Peter Bridgwater. “We’re excited that he finally is a member of the Clash.”
A native of the San Francisco Bay Area who starred at Cupertino High School and was a two-time all-America at Tampa after transferring from San Diego State, Sullivan has made 18 appearances for the U.S. national team. He played in two of the team’s three games at Italia ’90, and has played professionally in France (Le Touquet of the Second Division in 1988), Hungary (Raba ETO of the First Division in both 1989 and 1996), Sweden (Landskrona), Denmark (Broendby of the Super League in 1992), and Germany (Hertha Berlin of the Second Division in 1993).
Bridgwater believes that Sullivan’s versatility will help San Jose in its attempts to work out deals for other players.
“The league is very close to signing a Mexican First Division forward,” he said. “but if we don’t get that player, we might be allocated an attacking midfielder. If we get the forward, Chris can play in midfield, and if we get the midfielder, Chris can play forward. Either way, we get a very attack-minded player who will bring a lot of excitement to Spartan Stadium.”
