Swedish midfielder Anders Limpar, a veteran of two World Cups and several seasons in the English Premier League, has been allocated to the Colorado Rapids. Limpar, 33, has made 58 appearances for Sweden’s national team, including two of three matches at Italia ’90. He was also a member of the Swedish team at Euro ’92 and USA ’94. “Experience and success at the highest level are attributes that we are very excited about adding to our club,” said Colorado coach Glenn Myernick. “Anders is very technically gifted and has outstanding vision of the game. He has won many championships at many levels, and we’re excited that he has made MLS his next challenge.” Limpar began his professional career with Berne club Young Boys in the Swiss League in 1988 and moved to Italy’s Cremonese the following year. In 1990, he moved to famed London club Arsenal, where he shined as a playmaker for Paul Merson and Alan Smith and helped lead the Gunners to the English First Division (now Premier League) title. After three-plus seasons at Highbury, Limpar was sold to Everton for 1.6 million pounds in March of 1994. He helped the Liverpool club to avoid relegation and then helped it to the FA Cup title the next season. He moved to Birmingham of the English First Division in 1997 before returning to his native Sweden, where he led AIK Stockholm to the 1998 Allsvenskan title. “I’ve wanted to come to America and play for a while, and am glad that I was able to join Colorado now,” said Limpar. “I am very impressed with what I have seen and heard of the league — there are many good players and teams here. I think the Rapids have a very good chance of being a great team this year, and I am very excited to try and win this league, as well.”
