The Tampa Bay Mutiny filled its fourth foreign allocation slot with the acquisition of Bolivian national team forward Jefferson Gottardi Feb. 2. Gottardi, who turned 23 on Jan. 13, will be on loan to the league, from Bolivar of the Bolivian First Division, for one season, after which MLS has an option to buy his contract. Mutiny head coach Tim Hankinson requested the 6-foot-2, 175-pound Gottardi after seeing him in action for Bolivar. “This is a very big, strong, young talented forward,” said Hankinson. “He can shoot well with either foot and obviously is a big factor in the air. With he and Alejandro Sequeira, Mauricio Ramos and a wealth of talent in midfield and up front, our attack should be diversified and extremely potent this year.” Ramos has been a teammate of Gottardi in the past and believes the new Tampa Bay forward will “bring strength and goals to the team.” Like Ramos and D.C. United’s Marco Etcheverry, Gottardi is a product of the famed Tahuichi Academy in Santa Cruz, where he excelled as a youngster.
