Tampa Bay Mutiny captain Jan Eriksson, who has missed the last three games with chondral defects in his left knee, is tentatively scheduled to undergo surgery next week in Colorado and will be lost for the season. Eriksson, a solid veteran defender and former Swedish international, first injured his knee in February during the preseason. He had arthroscopic surgery February 11, then attempted to play through the pain and inflammation associated with the bone-on-bone injury. He started the Mutiny’s first six games this season before the injury forced him to the sideline. Eriksson started 28 of 29 games for Tampa Bay last year in his first season with the Mutiny, scoring two goals and assisting on one other score. “We will sorely miss Jan’s presence on the field this year,” Mutiny coach Tim Hankinson said. “This is an enormous blow to the club. The team is working very hard to address the future needs of adding a defender to the club.” With a foreign slot now available, the Mutiny have brought back Costa Rican forward Alejandro Sequiera, who was waived back on April 23 following the reassignment of Carlos Valderrama from the Miami Fusion to the Mutiny. “We were disappointed to have to waive Alejandro in the first place,” Hankinson said. “He is a player we never wanted to release because of his potential. He will be active immediately.” Sequiera started four games for the Mutiny earlier this year, and was scoreless after taking seven shots, four on goal.
