The Kansas City Wizards acquired all-time MLS leading scorer Roy Lassiter from the Miami Fusion in exchange for midfielder Chris Henderson. Lassiter has scored 81 goals and registered 34 assists (196 points) in 142 career games with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, D.C. United and the Fusion. He also scored the most goals and points in a single season, when he scored 27 goals (in 30 games) and totaled 58 points in 1996. Henderson, a flank midfielder, is coming off a banner season, scoring nine goals and nine assists during the WizardsÆ championship run. Moments after the Wizards won MLS Cup 2000, three forwards announced their retirements from soccer; Miklos Molnar, Mo Johnston and Alex Bunbury (Molnar and Johnston both were starters). This made the acquisition of a forward a priority for Kansas City, and it had become well known that Lassiter wasnÆt a good fit in Miami. Miami coach Ray Hudson on Henderson: “I’m a longtime admirer of Chris Henderson and I think he fits right in with what we want. I’ve always admired his ability and attitude. He’s just full of endeavor, and as the years have gone by, he’s gotten better. He’s got great vision and ability, and his desire comes through clear as day. ôHe covers the left side like a greyhound and with Jay (Heaps) on the right it should give us a real good tandem on the flanks. I think we got a real plum. His scoring ability is a great punctuation mark.” Kansas City coach Bob Gansler on the trade: “We are going to miss Chris (Henderson) as a player and a person. I go back with him a long time and value his friendship. It is a high price to pay, but you get value for value. ôGetting Roy Lassiter is something we felt we needed to do to shore up the goal scoring, with the departure of three forwards from last year. Roy has been the best goalscorer in the league and we will welcome him and look forward to incorporating him into the team.”
