Seven players have hit the 20-goal mark during an MLS regular season, but no one has done it twice.
Roy Lassiter came closest, hitting 27 in 1996 with Tampa Bay, then notching 18 with D.C. United in 1998 and 1999. Columbus' Stern John hit 26 in 1998 and also came up two short the following season. Raul Diaz Arce hit 23 in 1996 and 18 in 1998.
The 20-goal mark has not been reached since 2002, when Los Angeles' Carlos Ruiz struck 24 times and New England's Taylor Twellmen notched 23.
Ruiz, now with FC Dallas, and Twellman, are the only players who this season have a chance to hit the double 20.
Ruiz has 11 goals and seven games left. Twellman, who hit a hat trick last weekend, is in a better position. The league leading scorer with 14 goals, he has six games to notch six goals.
