Bolivian international midfielder Marco Etcheverry will be returning to Ecuador on loan from D.C. United to Club Sport Emelec in Guayaquil. Etcheverry, 28, played for Emelec’s city rival Barcelona last winter, leading the Canaries to the Ecuadoran Primera A championship. He scored six goals in his 12 games with Barcelona. The terms of Etcheverry’s loan call for him to stay with Emelec through Dec. 27, the final date of this year’s Torneo Clausura, which is the second half of Ecuador’s season. That date could be extended by about a week should Emelec play a series to determine this year’s champion. However, the Bolivian star will be released for D.C. United’s Dec. 5 match against Vasco da Gama of Brazil in the second leg of the Interamerican Cup in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Emelec is already assured of a berth in this year’s league championship, as it won the Torneo Apertura. The “Electristas” are currently fifth in one of the two six-team groups contesting the Torneo Clausura. If they rebound to win the Clausura title, Emelec would automatically win the Ecuadoran championship. If not, they will meet the Clausura winner in a season-ending two-leg series. Central American benefit match to be held Nov. 22 D.C. United will take on a Central Amerian selection in a match to benefit victims of Hurricane Mitch on Nov. 22 at RFK Stadium. The Central American side, which is still being formed, will include national team players from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. MLS stars such as Raul Diaz Arce, Jorge Rodriguez and Martin Machon are on the list of potential players. Game time is 1:00 p.m. (ET). Tickets are available through TicketMaster.
