SUPERCLASICO: The greatest game of the season and one of the best in league history took place at Spartan Stadium Saturday night.
San Jose and Columbus whirled through nearly 97 minutes of breathtaking play before the Quakes won an incredible 4-3 victory on a bizarre own goal in overtime.
A header by Ariel Graziani floated across the goalmouth to the far post, where defender Brian Dunseth and keeper Jon Busch collided in their attempts to clear it. Somehow the ball wound up in the net. Dunseth was credited with an own goal.
Edson Buddle scored twice to rally the Crew from a 3-1 deficit.
San Jose tied the MLS all-time home-unbeaten streak at 15 games by beating the Crew. Chicago went unbeaten in 15 home games from May 24, 2000 to May 30, 2001. That tied a mark set by San Jose from Aug. 21, 1999 to July 15, 2000.
GOALS OF THE WEEK: Because the Quakes-Crew game was not televised, two of its goals won't receive the fame they deserve.
Ronnie Ekelund blasted a incredible shot from 30 yards after midfield mate Richard Mulrooney cleverly flipped a free kick up into the air that Ekelund met with a vicious volley.
Buddle's equalizer in the 82nd minute came from a deep looping cross from the opposite wing by substitute Freddy Garcia. Buddle steamed in at the far post to smash a right-footed rocket low into the net.
Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz finished off a sweet five-player move — including a fine long-distance Simon Elliott pass — to drill the winner past Zach Thornton in a 2-1 victory over Chicago.
The Metros' Rodrigo Faria finished off Dallas in a 3-1 win with a sharp header from an excellent far-post cross by Mamadou Diallo.
SWEEP! The Galaxy's 2-1 comeback win gave it four-game sweep of the team's regular-season meetings.
Ruiz scored a pair of goals eight minutes apart to up his seasonal tally to 22 and break the club record of 21 goals set by Eduardo Hurtado in 1996.
Although they play in different conferences, the teams were paired together for an extra pair of games when they were ranked by last year's points totals in the standings.
The Metros and Burn also played four times this season and the Metros avoided being swept last Thursday by winning, 3-1, in Dallas.
LATE-LOSS STREAK. Chicago's loss to L.A. was the third consecutive game it had lost in the final minutes by a 2-1 score.
Wizard Chris Brown scored in the final minute of regulation to down the Fire Aug. 31 and Rev Douda Kante did the deed in the 89th minute Aug. 24.
CROWD COUNTS: On the plus side, the Fire sold out Cardinal Stadium for the third straight time with 15,731 fans.
Maybe the word is finally getting out in San Jose. The Quakes drew a season high of 14,792 for their spectacular victory. They still rank last in the league at 9,990 fans per game and are well below the league average of 15,419.
HEAD-AND-HEAD: Taylor Twellman did what he could to put pressure on Ruiz by hitting a hat trick to pace the Revs past D.C. United, 3-0 and breaking the club record for goals as did his Galaxy counterpart.
Twellman raised his goal total to 20, shattering the club mark of 18 set by Raul Diaz Arce in 1998.
