By Ridge Mahoney, Senior Editor BEST GOALS: Preki scored Kansas City’s goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to D.C. with a weaving run that took him from the right touchline to the center of the field for a low left-footed shot that found net. Preki cut inside Ivan McKinley and dribbled laterally with Eddie Pope in pursuit. Assisting, unofficially, on the play was Chris Klein, who threw a body block that prevented Mark Lisi from getting in a tackle. Dema Kovalenko broke past Orlando Perez and evaded Mike Petke before hitting a low center DaMarcus Beasley tapped in for the clinching goal in the Fire’s 2-0 defeat of the Metros. CREW CALL: Columbus is off to a 1-3 start and in two of those games has been unable to score at home on ESPN. It lost at home to Chicago in the opening game of the season, 2-0, and fell by the same score to New England last weekend. The homefield advantage has yet to take effect. Columbus has lost all three of its home games and has scored only one goal at Crew Stadium. UGLIES: Miscommunication between defenders and goalkeepers can be a terrible thing. It cost two MLS teams goals last weekend. A major mixup between Peter Vermes and Tony Meola presented Ali Curtis with a simple goal in D.C.’s 2-1 overtime win over the Wizards. Meola’s slide uprooted Vermes as he was trying to shield the ball from Curtis. The ball popped loose and Curtis rolled it home from a sharp angle. Dallas gained a 1-1 tie with the Galaxy when Jason Kreis kept after a ball Alexi Lalas was trying to shepherd back to keeper Matt Reis. Kreis stepped between them to gain control pushed the ball into the net. FIRST LOOKS: Back in action for the first time in 2002 last weekend after undergoing offseason surgeries were Hristo Stoitchkov and Jaime Moreno. Stoitchkov (hernia) came on in the 87th minute of the Fire’s 2-0 win over the Metros. On a team that will lose Josh Wolff and DaMarcus Beasley during the World Cup, he’ll be needed. Moreno (knee) played less than two minutes in D.C.’s win over Kansas City but that was enough. His header from a free kick triggered panic in the Wizards’ goalmouth and eventually Bobby Convey lifted a cross that Ivan McKinley headed in for the overtime winner. MILESTONES: Two were attained in the Fire’s victory. Fire coach Bob Bradley moved into third place with 73 wins on the all-time coaches’ list. Clint Mathis played his 100th MLS game. FLASH: The Rapids are set to announce the acquisition of Chilean midfielder Raul Palacios, 25, who will be added with a discovery slot obtained in a trade with Chicago. Colorado has already used its two discoveries for the current season on defender Rick Titus and forward Daniel Amokachi, so it traded a second-round SuperDraft pick for the discovery slot. Palacios has been playing on loan with Union Espanola in the Chilean First Division and has also played for Santiago Morning and Colo Colo.
