By Ridge Mahoney, Senior Editor BEST GOALS: Several legitimate Goal of the Year candidates highlighted four weekend games. Peter Nowak took off another of his scintillating runs against D.C. United, slaloming from the center circle to the edge of the penalty area, from whence he struck a low 20-yard bullet that beat Nick Rimando and glanced into the net off the inside of the post. Jason Kreis scored in his fifth consecutive game by diving headlong to meet a Joselito Vaca cross with a powerful header for the second goal in the Burn's 2-1 defeat of the Metros. Gavin Glinton struck in sudden-death to give the Galaxy a 2-1 overtime win over Kansas City. He raced down the left flank, pushed a pass to Mauricio Cienfuegos, then ran onto the return pass to drill a low shot into the net. TIME CLOCK, PLEASE: Galaxy players might start a push to be paid hourly. Glinton's goal marked the 11th straight game they had to play overtime and/or a tiebreaker. Not since losing to the Metros, 4-1, in the second game of the MLS quarterfinals last October have they walked off the field after 90 minutes. They beat the Metros in the third game in a tiebreaker, went to overtime in each of their semifinal games against Chicago, lost MLS Cup 2001 to the Quakes in OT, and have gone beyond 90 minutes in each of their six games this season. GOAL OFF A GOAL KICK! Sergi Daniv polished off a remarkable end-to-end sequence to score Chicago's first goal in a 3-0 rout of D.C. United. Zach Thorton's goal kick was headed on by Kelly Gray to Ante Razov, who nodded it into space for Daniv to collect and shoot past Rimando. BAD GOALS: Metros keeper Tim Howard fumbled a low shot to trigger a goalmouth scramble from which Ryan Suarez scored the first goal in the Burn's 2-1 win. In the same match, Diego Serna scored his first goal as a Metro with a low shot that took a funny hop and skipped through Matt Jordan. RIGHTY-LEFTY: Quakes left back Wade Barrett specializes in left-footed crosses and right-footed goals. He scored the first goal of the Quakes 3-2 comeback win over Columbus with a right-footed shot after his left-footed cross had been repelled. His only goal last year was a low bullet with his right in a win over the Metros. San Jose scored its second goal after Barrett's left-footed cross was headed into the goalmouth by Dwayne DeRosario and poked into the net by Ronnie Ekelund. Ramiro Corrales won the game with a left-footed shot into the top corner after his right-footed effort had hit teammate Manny Lagos, who pushed it back to Corrales. MORE GOALS: The scoring average had been languishing at about 2.3 goals per game. Four games last weekend produced 14 goals for an average of 3.5 raising the season average to 2.43. DEBUTS AND RETURNS: Jaime Moreno made his first start of the season and played 67 minutes in United's loss. Craig Capano came on as a sub in Chicago's win and thus became the second-youngest player (16 years, 9 months) to appear in an MLS game. (He was two months older than Santino Quaranta when he made his D.C. United debut last season.) United sent on Dennis Ludwig in the same match for his first MLS action. HIGH MARKS: Preki became the first player in league history to record 60 goals and 60 assists when he converted a penalty kick in the Wizards' loss to the Galaxy. Jason Kreis joined Preki and Roy Lassiter in the 200-point club with his goal and assist for Dallas. He has 71 goals and 58 assists and is next in line to join the 60-60 club. RALLY CAPS: The Quakes broke a streak of 12 games they had not won after conceding the first goal by rallying from a 2-0 deficit to down the Crew, 3-2. San Jose had been 0-9-3 in games in which the opposition scored first.
