The Kansas City Wizards have traded midfielder Ryan Tinsley to the Chicago Fire for defender Jesse Van Saun and the Fire’s first-round pick in the 2000 MLS Supplemental Draft. Van Saun, who helped lead St. John’s to the NCAA Championship in 1996, was drafted by the New England Revolution in the second round of the 1998 college draft. He was claimed off waivers by Chicago on April 12, 1999, but has yet to appear in a game this season. Last year, Van Saun, 23, appeared as a second-half substitute in five games for the Revolution and started and played in six games for the U.S. Project-40 team, tallying one assist. He is going to play for the Project-40 team as they travel to play the San Francisco Bay Seals May 6 and the Sacramento Geckos May 8. He will join the Wizards when he returns on May 10. “Jesse is an up and coming player who will provide us with some much needed insurance on the left side,” said Wizards’ GM Doug Newman. Tinsley, 27, was the Wizards 1st round supplemental pick in 1997. He appeared in 61 of 64 possible games in ’97 and ’98, but has not appeared in a game this season. In his MLS career, he has tallied three goals and nine assists for 15 points. Last season he was second on the team with two blocks. The Wizards, who waived forward Paul Wright yesterday, now have two first round picks in each of the 2000 college and supplemental drafts.
