By Ridge Mahoney According to a source, Chicago and New England are close to finalizing a trade that would send striker Eric Wynalda to the Fire for draft picks. Chicago coach Bob Bradley would only confirm that discussions were ongoing and said he would not comment on ramifications of the deal until it is completed. The Fire is at the roster limit of 18 players and would have to move a player if it acquired Wynalda. Injuries have limited Wynalda, 31, to just 17 games and three goals in the past two seasons. He was traded to the Revs by Miami last July but played just five games. He let his contract expire at the end of last year and tried to work a trade to Los Angeles, then eventually re-signed with MLS at a reported salary of $70,000. Wynalda is the U.S. all-time scoring leader with 34 goals in 106 international appearances. His last U.S. appearance was February 19, 2000 against Colombia. The Revs had been discussing a deal for Wynalda with the Galaxy but those talks broke off a few days ago. The Galaxy is one of many teams interested in signing defender Craig Waibel, who was waived by the Quakes last month, as a discovery player.
